Preparing your home for babies arrival

Welcoming a new baby into your home is an incredibly exciting and joyous occasion. However, it also requires careful preparation to ensure that your living space is safe, comfortable, and ready to accommodate your new family member. Whether you’re a first-time parent or adding to your growing family, here’s a practical guide to help you prepare your home for the arrival of your little one. The emphasis here is on PRACTICAL

Step 1: Setting Up the Nursery

Creating a nursery is a special part of preparing for your baby. Here are some key considerations:

  • Crib /Bassinet Safety: Choose a sturdy crib that meets current safety standards. Ensure the mattress fits snugly and is firm. For me breathability was the most important factor so when we chose our co-sleeping bassinet, the mesh sides were the key criteria.
  • Comfortable Bedding: Use fitted sheets designed for cribs and avoid loose bedding to reduce the risk of suffocation.
  • Storage Solutions: Organise clothes, nappies, and baby essentials with storage bins, shelves, and drawers.

Step 2: Stocking Up on Essentials

Make sure you have essential items ready before your baby arrives:

  • Nappies and Wipes: Stock up on newborn diapers and gentle wipes.
  • Clothing: Purchase a variety of comfortable clothing suitable for different weather conditions. Muslins are very handy for the bath to keep baby warm across the shoulders.
  • Feeding Supplies: Whether breastfeeding or bottle-feeding, have necessary supplies like bottles, breast pumps, and formula. Learn how to sterilise the bottles and pump and have them ready to go for when you bring baby home from hospital.
  • Healthcare Products: Have a baby thermometer, nasal aspirator, baby-safe bath products and laundry detergent, and a first aid kit handy. Cotton buds for lightly swabbing the belly button once the cord falls off. Our babies nails grew by the second so having a battery operated nail file was super handy when we did not want to use nail clippers.

Step 3: Creating a Comfortable Environment

Prepare your home to be a nurturing environment for your baby:

  • Temperature Control: Keep the room comfortably warm (recommended temperature is around 22 degrees Celsius and use a baby-friendly thermometer to monitor temperature.
  • Air Quality: Ensure good ventilation and consider using an air purifier if needed.
  • Soft Lighting: Use soft, adjustable lighting for nighttime feedings and diaper changes.

Step 4: Getting Support Ready

Preparing your home isn’t just about physical arrangements. It’s also about setting up support systems:

  • Childcare Arrangements: If applicable, finalise childcare plans and arrangements.
  • Healthcare Providers: Choose a pediatrician (or a GP you like and are comfortable with as you will likely be scheduling lots of appointment over the coming year) and schedule your baby’s first check-up, typically at 6 weeks.
  • Support Network: Reach out to friends, family, or parenting groups for emotional support and advice.
  • First Aid: I would highly recommend attending a first aid and child safety course.
  • Meal Preperation: Those final few days where you are waiting for babies arrival can be a time to rest and relax. Whilst it is tempting to do nothing at all during these days, if you are anything like me you will be very glad you did some batch cooking. Because there is very little time for it in the first few weeks of becoming a new parent and that is when you need nourishing food.

Step 5: Preparing Siblings and Pets

If you have older children or pets, involve them in the process:

  • Sibling Preparation: Talk to older siblings about the new arrival and involve them in setting up the nursery.
  • Pet Adjustment: Gradually introduce pets to baby items and establish boundaries for interaction.

Step 6: Final Touches

Before your baby arrives, take care of these final details:

  • Emergency Plan: Have emergency contact numbers and a plan in place.
  • Hospital Bag: Pack a bag with essentials for yourself and your baby for the hospital stay.
  • Rest and Relax: Take time to rest and prepare mentally for the upcoming changes.

Conclusion

Preparing your home for your baby’s arrival is an exciting journey that involves both practical preparations and emotional readiness. Remember, every family’s needs are unique, so trust your instincts and seek support from loved ones as you embark on this new chapter of parenthood. Congratulations on this wonderful adventure ahead!
