As your due date approaches, preparing your hospital bag becomes a crucial task on your pregnancy checklist. For me, maintaining a minimalist and organized approach to packing was key – nothing stresses me out more than chaotic disorganization. A helpful tip is to check with your midwife about what the hospital provides, such as nappies and wipes. Here’s a personal guide based on my own experience and insights:
For Mum:
Clothing & Underwear:
- A soft, oversized nightgown for labor and delivery (opt for something inexpensive or an old one).
- Comfortable clothes or spare pyjamas for your hospital stay. I found loose layers preferable, especially since hospitals can be warm.
- Flip flops for the shower and slippers for walking around.
Toiletries: Besides the basics for skincare and hygiene, consider:
- Lip balm
- Ice packs (especially if you have a vaginal delivery)
- Perineal wash bottle
- Soothing postpartum wipes
- Lanolin gel (if breastfeeding)
- Hand sanitizer
Accessories:
- Breastfeeding pillow
- Hair ties
- Phone charger with an extra-long cable and a battery pack
- Snacks and a water bottle (dehydration during labor is common, and snacks are handy post-delivery)
- iPad or tablet for entertainment (babies often sleep a lot in the first days)
For Baby:
Packing for your newborn should balance excitement with practicality. Think about whether you are going to get your baby dressed each day in the hospital and if so what you would like to out them in. For me it I preferred to swaddle my baby only as I wanted to do a lot of skin to skin (which also helps milk come in).:
- Two baby grows and vests (packed in sandwich bags to stay organised)
- A going-home outfit including a hat, socks, and cardigan
- A special blanket
- Spare diapers, sudocream, wipes (though many hospitals provide these)
Tips for Packing:
Start organising your hospital bag by your 36th week to avoid last-minute stress. Clearly labelling items, such as using sandwich bags for outfits, can save time and frustration, especially if someone else needs to find something for you. Remember, simplicity is key – focus on items that enhance your comfort and peace of mind. Don’t forget your healthcare cards!
Final Thoughts:
As you pack your hospital bag, keep in mind that every mother’s journey is unique. Tailor your packing list to suit your preferences and needs, knowing you’re creating a space that supports you through one of life’s most incredible moments. Wishing you a smooth and joyful delivery, filled with love, comfort, and anticipation for the beautiful journey ahead.
